Growth in passenger numbers continues at Hollywood Burbank Airport

Though the holiday months have come and gone, Hollywood Burbank Airport officials reported that the trend of increasing passenger numbers at the airfield is still going strong.

Nerissa Sugars, the airport’s manager of air service development, told members of the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority on Monday that 370,230 passengers flew in and out of Hollywood Burbank in January, which was 43,039 more than the same month last year.

Though airline travel tapers off during the winter months, the commissioners said they were happy to hear about the 13.2% improvement in passenger numbers.

Southwest Airlines, the largest air carrier at Hollywood Burbank, reported 278,606 passengers in January, which was 32,727 more than the previous year. Sugars said the hike was due partly to a number of people traveling to the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January.

Alaska Airlines also had positive growth at the start of this year. The carrier tallied 41,043 passengers for the month, a boost of 10,337 more than in 2017.

United Airlines had modest improvement, reporting 23,603 passengers in January, which was a jump of 3,852 more than last year.

Delta Airlines had a relatively flat start to 2018, as 9,786 passengers flew with the air carrier, just 71 fewer people than in 2017. Sugars added that despite the small difference, Hollywood Burbank managed to outperform Long Beach Airport, John Wayne Airport and Ontario International Airport in flights with Delta for the month.

JetBlue Airways also had slightly fewer passengers in January, tallying 6,982 people who traveled with the carrier. That was 387 fewer passengers than the year before.

American Airlines continues its slump at Hollywood Burbank, reporting 10,210 passengers in January, which was 3,419 fewer than in 2017.

Hollywood Burbank wasn’t the only airport in the region that had a good showing in January. Los Angeles International Airport had 6,687,107 passengers, which was 242,618 more than the year before.

Ontario reported 374,977 passengers in January, an increase of 35,894. Long Beach had 321,165 passengers, which was a bump up of 20,658 passengers. John Wayne reported 817,258 passengers, a rise of 23,484 passengers compared to 2017.

Though passenger numbers were up at Hollywood Burbank, the use of the airfield’s parking facilities remains relatively flat, said Denis Carvill, the airport’s deputy executive director of engineering, maintenance, operations and airline relations.

He said the airport made about $1.5 million in parking revenues for the month, which was about $60,000 less than the previous year.

Hollywood Burbank received an additional $207,027 from ride-sharing companies in January. There were 35,054 passenger drop-offs and 34,955 passenger pick-ups, according to Mike Duong, the airport’s senior manager of business and compliance.
