Three to vie for Burbank Unified school board

Share

This spring, three familiar faces to Burbank schools will vie for two seats on the Burbank Unified school board.

Of the three residents running, two currently serve on the board and the third has played an active role in the school district’s Parent Teacher Assn.

All three are either a parent of children who have attended Burbank schools or are currently enrolled in them.

Currently in his third term, incumbent Larry Applebaum was first elected to the school board in 2005, making the 57-year-old general contractor the longest current serving member on the board.

Fellow incumbent Charlene Tabet was elected to the school board in 2013.

The 52-year old former teacher came to the board with years of involvement in the Burbank chapter of National Charity League, the PTA and as a board member for the Burbank Vikings tackle-football and cheer program.

Meanwhile, Steve Frintner, a 57-year old senior manager at the Walt Disney Co., is aiming for a seat on the board for the first time, following years of involvement in various PTA groups.

In 2013, Frintner became the first man in Burbank Unified’s history to become president of the Burbank Council PTA, the guiding post of the district’s 16 schools’ PTA groups.

He has since worked with fellow parents and students to pass a resolution backed by both the California PTA and National PTA to promote an inclusive learning environment for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and questioning youth, and to incorporate health standards into curriculum to address LGBTQ students.
