Passenger numbers at Hollywood Burbank Airport take off in September

Hollywood Burbank Airport has seen modest increases in the number of passengers traveling through its terminals this year. However, September proved to be one of the best-performing months for the airfield — an 11.5% jump from the previous year.

The airport reported 355,341 passengers in September, which was 36,572 more than in 2015 and 33,384 more than what officials had budgeted for this year, said Mark Hardyment, the airport’s director of governmental and environmental affairs during a meeting of the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority on Monday.

“This was probably the most robust increase that we have seen in some time,” he said.

With another positive showing in September, Hollywood Burbank has seen five consecutive months where passenger numbers were better than the previous year and what officials had projected.

Southwest Airlines continues to be the airport’s strongest airline, reporting 265,591 passengers in September, or 33,562 more than in 2015. United Airlines also had a strong month, with 27,854 passengers, 8,545 more than last year.

Delta Air Lines had 8,473 passengers fly with it in September, which was 1,930 more compared to last year. JetBlue Airways showed a modest improvement, tallying 7,902 passengers, which was 323 more passengers than in 2015.

American Airlines had the largest decrease during September, reporting 11,881 passengers for the month, 4,161 fewer than the year before. Alaska Airlines had 33,640 passengers, a drop of 2,513 passengers from 2015’s number.

Parking revenue has also continued to stay in the black. In September, the airfield made $1,704,234, $66,319 more than last year, said Mary Tromp, the authority’s parking manager.

The parking structure has been the airport’s strongest performing parking facility this year, mainly due to the ever-increasing number of ride-sharing drivers making passenger pickups there. Officials reported 25,374 $3 transactions in the parking structure, 14,601 more than the year before, Tromp said.
