Burroughs water polo dominates rival Burbank

It was a completely dominant effort by the Burroughs High boys’ water polo team in its match Wednesday afternoon against Burbank.

The Indians defense shut out its cross-town rival over the first two quarters and the Burroughs offense tallied 19 goals during that span in the Pacific League contest.

Burroughs carried that big start to a convincing 24-9 victory at Burbank High.

“That’s what we were hoping to do, we wanted to have a good start against them,” said Burroughs Coach Jacob Cook, whose team is ranked No. 3 in CIF Southern Section Division V. “It was a really great effort by our guys and they had things going very early.

“I was very pleased with the way that we played, on offense and defense.”

Burroughs (19-5, 5-1 in league ), whose only league loss came against undefeated Hoover, received a huge effort from Davo Arakelyan, who tallied a match-high nine goals. Teammate Aram Nordanyan added five goals, Marko Vucetic contributed four and Jerry Solano chipped in with two.

“We just had some great passing today,” Cook said.

Goalkeepers David Jimenez and Andre Abramyan combined for the win.

The Indians jumped out to an early lead, outscoring Burbank (9-13, 1-4), 10-0, in the first quarter. Burroughs tacked on nine more goals in the second quarter and headed into halftime with a 19-0 advantage.

Burbank finally scored its first goal in the third quarter, a stanza in which it outscored the Indians, 4-3. The Bulldogs also outscored their rival in the fourth quarter, 5-2.

“I think for our guys, especially early in the game, they were intimidated a little by Burroughs,” Burbank Coach Allyson Young said. “Our guys got very upset and frazzled in the first quarter. Burroughs just came out stronger than us.

“It absolutely sucks to lose and it’s even worse to lose by that much. But knowing a school from our city is doing that well is nice. And they are going to go on and do great things, which is exciting.”

Brandon Wilson had three goals and Andrew Senane and Varuzhan Bilbulyan added two each for the Bulldogs.
