Andrew Bardales broke away from his defensive marker and dashed to the left post.

Within a second of arriving uncovered, Bardales delivered a windfall for the Burroughs High boys’ soccer team.

Bardales scored the tying goal with about three minutes left in the second half to give Burroughs a 1-1 tie against Glendale on Tuesday in a pool-play match of the Crescenta Valley High Tournament.

“Cameron Kelly made a great play getting the ball through the people and I was able to put it in,” Bardales said. “I got away from my marker and everything seemed to happen in a split second.

“I thought we played well. Both teams played real well. It’s good that we were the one that tied it.”

Glendale (3-1-1) took a 1-0 lead in the 74th minute when Harut Malkon headed in a corner kick from Chris Atikian past Burroughs goalkeeper Jordan Morgan.

Malkon said things appeared to be in control for Glendale before Pacific League rival Burroughs (6-2-2) evened the contest.

“We got the goal and were feeling good about ourselves,” Malkon said. “I think after we scored, we started to get ahead of ourselves.

“We know Burroughs has a dangerous team on things like throw-ins and crosses. We just got unlucky on the tying goal. It’s good to see Burroughs, because we’ll definitely be ready for them the next time. On my goal, I love trying to score off corner kicks. Chris made a nice cross to me.”

The Nitros and Indians traded quality scoring opportunities earlier. Glendale goalkeeper Oscar Menjivar (five saves) stopped two shots inside the box from Anton Prather and William Rosales in the 52nd minute. Glendale’s Haik Kolsuzyan then came down the right side in the 63rd minute and launched a low shot that skipped just wide of them right post.

“It kept going back and forth,” said Burroughs Coach Mike Kodama, a former All-Area Boys’ Soccer Coach of the Year. “It’s a tournament game, not a league game and there were two late goals.

“I liked the fact that we kept on moving after Glendale scored and we stayed with it. Then Andrew gets away from his defender and gets open at the post. That’s a big goal.”

Glendale Coach Artur Aghasyan said the Nitros fared well.

“It was a very good game between two real good teams,” Aghasyan said. “You can always learn something from games like these.

“Overall, I’m happy with the way we played. We got a very nice goal from Harut and he’s the kind of player who can win a lot of those headers.”

Burroughs and Glendale will participate in pool-play matches Wednesday. Burroughs will take on San Fernando at 9 a.m. and Glendale will meet Valencia Valencia at 11. The four-day tournament will wrap up Friday.

The teams will meet in a pair of league games — Jan. 13 at Glendale and Feb. 3 at Burroughs.
