Providence girls’ soccer breezes past Yeshiva, 5-0

GLENDALE — A change in venue for its Independence League match led to a chilly evening for the Providence High soccer team. It didn’t stop the Pioneers from remaining red hot, backed by their sturdy one-two combination.

Providence and Yeshiva were set to meet Tuesday at Ferraro Fields in Los Angeles. However, the match was moved back 90 minutes and shifted to the Glendale Sports Complex. Temperatures plummeted, but it hardly seem to faze the Pioneers.

Kelly Fitzgerald scored three goals and Milena Mooradian added two goals to power Providence to a convincing 5-0 victory.

“It’s just one of those things where you have to keep moving to beat the cold,” said Fitzgerald, who registered her first hat trick of the season. “We had some extra time to warm up after the game got moved and we stayed composed.

“Things have been coming together real well and we have a good mix of players who know what they need to do. We were able to convert on a lot of our chances and stayed within ourselves.”

Providence (4-3, 4-1 in league) limited Yeshiva (0-5 in league) to one shot on goal and completed the two-match season series sweep. The Pioneers recorded a 1-0 home win against the Panthers on Jan. 7 at Occidental College.

On Tuesday, Providence dominated from the start and rarely allowed Yeshiva to cross midfield.

Mooradian had two good chances in the first 10 minutes of the contest. She then made it 1-0 in the 30th minute on a low shot inside the post.

The Pioneers, who qualified for the CIF Southern Section Division VII playoffs last season before falling in a wild-card match to St. Mary’s Academy, extended the lead to 2-0 on a goal in the final minute of the first half by Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald’s goal seemed to ignite Providence.

“That was a big goal and gave the team more confidence,” said Providence assistant Sarah Fischer, who filled in for head coach Jose Aguilar. “It gave us more room to work and we had a lot of good chances in the first half.

“It’s a good group of players and they all know what to do and where to be. We have some good leaders from our younger players and our seniors.

“It’s always good when you have a combination of Milena and Kelly because they are always capable of coming up big.”

Mooradian made it 3-0 in the 34th minute.

“It’s been an enjoyable season so far,” said Mooradian, who nearly recorded a hat trick in the 42nd minute. “I thought I had a good game.

“It’s great when you see people contributing. We’ve been improving with each match and you want to see that keep happening.”

Fitzgerald scored in the 72nd minute to make it 4-0 before closing out the scoring with about three minutes remaining.

Providence will compete in another league road match against Milken Community at 3:15 p.m. Thursday at the Sepulveda Basin Sports Complex in Van Nuys.
