Football previews: Burbank at Glendale; Burroughs at Pasadena; La Verne Lutheran at Bellarmine-Jefferson

BURBANK VS. GLENDALE

WHEN: 7 p.m. Thursday

WHERE: Moyse Field (Glendale High)

RECORDS: The Bulldogs are 2-2, 1-0 in the Pacific League; the Nitros are 1-3, 0-1

LAST WEEK: Burbank defeated Muir, 39-14; Glendale lost to Crescenta Valley, 52-0

OUTLOOK: Burbank enters the Pacific League contest after rolling in its league opener last week following a bye. The Bulldogs received a big game from senior running back/safety Nick Warren, who scored two rushing touchdowns and intercepted a pair of passes. Burbank, which tied for second in league last season, defeated Muir for the first time since 2011. The Bulldogs defense has continued to play well and is surrendering an average of 15.5 points a game. In contrast, Glendale gives up 30.5 points a contest. The Nitros’ lone win this season came in a nonleague game against Vasquez, 35-14. Glendale is led on offense by senior quarterback Tyler Artavia.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: Burbank’s two losses, to Canyon Country Canyon and Downey, have been by a total of eight points.

BURROUGHS VS. PASADENA

WHEN: 7 p.m. Friday

WHERE: Pasadena High

RECORDS: The Indians are 2-2, 1-0 in the Pacific League; the Bulldogs are 0-4, 0-1

LAST WEEK: Burroughs defeated Hoover, 55-21; Pasadena lost to Arcadia, 10-0

OUTLOOK: Burroughs senior running back Chance Bell made history last week against Hoover to open Pacific League play. The San Diego State commit scored six touchdowns and ran for 332 yards. With his effort, Bell became the program’s all-time career rushing leader with 3,367 yards, surpassing Zander Anding, who had 3,345. Bell has scored 12 touchdowns in four games. The Indians also received a fine effort from junior running back Ben Peters, who had four carries for 66 yards and a touchdown, as well as scoring a second touchdown on an 80-yard kickoff return. Burroughs will be taking on a Pasadena team that has struggled. The Bulldogs have been outscored, 128-23, and averaged just 5.7 points a game.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: Bell, who wears No. 22, bested Anding’s career rushing mark by 22 yards.

BELLARMINE-JEFFERSON VS. LA VERNE LUTHERAN

WHEN: 3 p.m. Saturday

WHERE: Flintridge Prep

RECORDS: The Guards are 1-2; the Trojans are 1-4.

LAST WEEK: Bell-Jeff lost to Flintridge Prep, 71-8; La Verne Lutheran lost to San Jacinto Valley Academy, 50-14

OUTLOOK: The Guards are looking to try to bounce back after losing to a very good Rebels team , nearly one week removed from earning the program’s first victory since 2012. The only touchdown Bell-Jeff could muster came on a one-yard run by Tomas Butkus in the third quarter. The Guards, who are a freelance team, will be facing a Trojans team which has a 60-0 win against Westmark for its lone victory of the season. La Verne Lutheran, which competes in the Express League, has an accomplished player in junior quarterback Jacob Espinoza, who leads the squad in passing and rushing.

SOMETHING INTERESTING: While Bell-Jeff gives up an average of 40.6 points a game, La Verne Lutheran surrenders an average of 33.6.
