Burroughs girls’ golf tandem misses cut at CIF event

Throughout their four years, Ashley Phelps and Maddie Riggs have served as pillars for the Burroughs High golf team.

The duo has helped the Indians consistently contend and reach the CIF Southern Section team playoffs. While Burroughs will return to the playoffs later, Phelps and Riggs competed for the first time at the CIF Southern Section Northern Individual Tournament on Monday at River Ridge Golf Club’s Vineyard Course.

Unfortunately for Phelps and Riggs, they encountered some difficulty early in their rounds and finished with a 12-over-par 84 and 89, respectively. Phelps tied for 63rd and Riggs tied for 78th.

The cut was 77 in a field of 121 competitors.

“It wasn’t the best day for either of them and things just didn’t happen,” said Burroughs Coach Greg Everhart, whose team finished third in the Pacific League behind San Marino and Arcadia. “Our goal coming in to the season was to make the playoffs as a team and possibly send a couple of players to the individual tournament, so we were able to do that.

“It’s a pretty tough course and the conditions changed throughout the round. To get two players to the individual tournament is quite impressive. Ashley and Maddie handled themselves well and they represented the school and the league well.

The top 36 advanced to the Southern California Golf Assn. Qualifying Tournament, which will be held Nov. 3 at Western Hills Golf Club in Chino Hills.

It marked the first time the Indians sent multiple players to the event since 2011, when Joany Gao and Ravipa Losakul participated.

Phelps, a senior who finished eighth in league, said the course proved to be demanding.

“It’s a very tricky course with the elements,” said Phelps, a reigning All-Area selection. “I had some bad holes and it just seemed to snowball from there.”

The UC Irvine-bound Riggs, fighting a cold, said she struggled at the start of her round. She had a triple-bogey on the first hole before posting a double-bogey on her next hole.

“I just had a couple of bad holes that put me five-over,” said Riggs, who placed seventh in league. “I usually don’t find myself in that tough of a spot so early.

“I just tried to enjoy the experience and it’s been my goal all four years to get here to CIF.”

Burroughs will participate in the CIF Southern Section Northern Team Division. The event will be held at 8 a.m. Monday at Los Robles Greens in Thousand Oaks.

“It’s going to be great to go back to the team playoffs,” said Everhart, the reigning All-Area Girls’ Golf Coach of the Year. “It’s a different course that will have challenges and we’ll try to go there and shoot the best we can.”
