Sports roundup: Burroughs girls’ soccer starts strong against Louisville

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Burroughs 3, Louisville 1: The Indians opened their season with a nonleague victory Tuesday afternoon at Crespi High.

Burroughs received goals from Maddie Riggs, Jazmine Valdez and Mireya Gonzalez and outshot Louisville, 18-3.

The Indians also received fine efforts from midfielder Alondra Solis and defenders Delila Varela and Larissa Perez.

Burbank 1, Monrovia 1: The Bulldogs were able to tally a late goal to salvage a nonleague tie Tuesday afternoon in their first contest of the season.

Ryan Verhoeven scored the equalizer on a shot from 18 yards out in the 65th minute to tie the score.

Nicole Winters played all but 10 minutes in goal for Burbank.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Burbank 4, South Pasadena 2: The Bulldogs had to battle back to earn the nonleague victory Tuesday afternoon in their season opener on the road.

Burbank, which trailed, 2-1, in the second half, received two goals — including a penalty kick — and an assist from Irwin Solegyan.

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 2, Burroughs 1: It was a tough start to the season for the Indians, who dropped the nonleague contest Tuesday at home.

In the 66th minute, Burroughs’ Jerry Salizar dribbled up the right side and was knocked over inside the box, prompting a penalty kick. Diego Galaviz made good on the penalty shot.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Sierra Canyon 52, Burroughs 30: It was a season-opening loss for the Indians, which dropped the pool-play game Tuesday to kick off the Valencia Tournament.

Haley Wilson had eight points, 11 rebounds and three steals, Jordan Meltzer added 10 points and four steals and Brooke Radcliffe had nine points and six rebounds for Burroughs.

Notre Dame Academy 69, Bellarmine-Jefferson 29: The Guards fell to 0-2 with the pool-play loss Tuesday in the Providence Paul Sutton Tip-Off Classic at Bell-Jeff.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 10, Burroughs 4: The Indians fell in the nonleague match Tuesday afternoon at home.

Burroughs is 1-1.
