Sports Roundup: Burroughs boys’ basketball earns spot in tournament championship

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Burroughs 87, Trinity Classical Academy 30: Brannan Shepherd and Omar Searcy scored 16 points each and Justin Henderson added 13 to pace the Indians to a victory Thursday evening in the Buckley Tournament.

Burroughs (3-0) will face Thousand Oaks at 6:30 p.m. Saturday in the championship game.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Bellarmine-Jefferson 42, Holy Martyrs 32: The Guards earned the victory Thursday evening in the fifth-place semifinal of the 28th annual Providence Paul Sutton Tip-Off Classic.

Bell-Jeff (4-1) will play in the fifth-place game at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Providence against an opponent to be determined.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

La Cañada 3, Burbank 2: The Bulldogs couldn’t earn the nonleague win Thursday afternoon at home.

Jossica Roca had a goal and an assist, Adrianna Saurukhanyan had a goal and Dani Yanez had an assist for Burbank (0-2).

BOYS’ SOCCER

Burroughs 2, Van Nuys 1: The Indians opened play in the Ralph Brandt Tournament with a victory Thursday afternoon at Memorial Field.

Anton Prather scored the first goal for Burroughs (2-0) midway through the first half on a penalty kick. The game-winner was scored by Diego Galaviz on an indirect free kick with 20 minutes left.

Palmdale Aerospace Academy 4, Providence 1: Paul Swain managed the only goal for the Pioneers in the nonleague loss Thursday afternoon at Occidental College.

GIRLS’ WATER POLO

Sherman Oaks Notre Dame 10, Burroughs 8: Despite four goals, four steals and two assists from Gwen Turla, the Indians lost on the road Thursday.

Robin Alves added three goals and Melanie Gazarian had eight saves and three steals for Burroughs (1-1).

Calabasas 3, Burbank 0: The Bulldogs sputtered on offense Thursday afternoon in the nonleague loss at home.

Burbank slipped to 0-3.
