There were glimpses of what Talia Patterson was capable of during her junior campaign in the 2016-17 girls’ volleyball season for Providence High.

“Talia had to sit out under CIF rules when she transferred in,” Providence coach James Jimenez said. “The way our schedule was set up, we just had so many games that we played before that date that CIF set for transfers to be eligible

“She just missed so many games, but when she became eligible she just came in and just took over for us.”

This past season, Patterson played the entire time for Pioneers, leading them in many categories and helping the team qualify for the CIF Southern Section playoffs.

Patterson’s efforts were recognized Monday afternoon when she was named to the All-CIF Division VIII first-team after the CIF office released teams for 10 divisions.

“I think by her play that she was one of the best players in our division,” Jimenez said. “She was just a big impact player for us and she was a big part of why we were successful.”

Patterson, who was also selected on the All-Liberty League team, led the squad in kills with 291 and also had 201 digs and 30 aces.

“I’ve had good offensive players in the past, but usually our offense was more spread out,” Jimenez said. “But this past year Talia had to carry a lot of the lead and she didn’t disappoint. I think we could count on her for a good 15 to 20 points every single time.”

Providence finished with a 14-8 record and tied for second place in the Liberty League. The Pioneers fell in the second round of the playoffs to Nordhoff in four games.

“Talia was just a great all-around player for us and she really worked hard to get an All-CIF award like this,” Jimenez said.
