Sports Briefs: CXF MMA brings lightweight tourney to Burbank

CXF 8: Cali Kings toes line in Burbank

California Xtreme Fighting will set down at the Los Angeles-Burbank Marriott Convention Center on Saturday night with CXF 8: Cali Kings, featuring an eight-man lightweight tournament.

Lights Out and Bash Boxing will put on the event that will feature the start of the tournament that will determine the first Cali King.

Showcasing a slew of notable Southern California fighters, the opening round is scheduled to feature Thor Skancke (9-7) against Darren Smith (10-7), Jalin Turner (4-2) versus Richard Leroy (4-0), Shohei Yamamoto (4-2) facing Joshua Jones (6-0) and Dominick Clark (10-6) fighting Roosevelt Roberts (2-0).

Undefeated Glendale Fighting Club combatant Leon Shahbazyan (4-0) is also slated to compete on the card.

Dog Pound basketball camp opens on Monday

Boys and girls looking to improve their basketball skills are invited to attend the Dog Pound Summer Youth Basketball Camp taking place at Burbank High from Monday through Wednesday.

The camp is for players ages 6-14 and includes individual instruction on skills and fundamentals, skill evaluation and recommendations, competitions, contests, awards, prizes, trivia and a T-shirt with camp registration.

Burbank High boys’ basketball coach Jamayne Potts will run the camp along with assistants Christopher Ortiz, Rico Marshall, Roger Smith and Kevin Rojo.

The camp will run from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and goers are asked to bring a snack and plenty of fluids.

Cost of the camp is $200 and payment can be made via credit card, check or money order.

Pikhart nabs All-Liberty League

Junior opposite Zack Pikhart was his team’s sole selection to the All-Liberty League boys’ volleyball team.

Pikhart was his squad’s most dangerous weapon on the attack.

The Pioneers finished their season at 7-14, 1-5 in league.
