Athletes vs. Cancer Celebrity game comes to town

Former Los Angeles Lakers, Clippers and UCLA Bruins basketball player Matt Barnes and rapper Snoop Dogg are hosting the fourth annual Athletes versus Cancer Celebrity flag football charity game Sunday, Aug. 6 at Burroughs High.

The gates open at 5 p.m. and kickoff is set for 6:30.

Guests scheduled to participate include Stephan Curry, Kevin Durant, Nick Young, Draymond Green, Aaron Gordon, DeMar De Rozan, Jordan Clarkson, Zach Randolph, Chris Paul, Willie Cauley-Stein, DeAndre Jordan, JaVale McGee, Chris Brown and The Game.

Children 6 and under are free, with tickets at $10 for kids over 6 and $15 for adults. There will be plenty of activities, including a bouncy house, face painting and bungee action.

Return to Friday Night Lights

The Burbank High football team will host a “Return to Friday Night Lights” alumni game fundraiser at 6 p.m. Friday at the school’s field, 902 N. Third St., Burbank.

Dinner, silent auction, prizes and an alumni game will be held. Alumni are invited.

The cost is $20, which includes dinner and the game.

The event is free to the public. Food and raffle tickets will be available for purchase.

Youth volleyball camps

Boys’ and girls’ volleyball players 8-14 can hone their skills and learn about the sport at a Real’s Youth Volleyball Camps.

Under the direction of Burroughs High girls’ volleyball coach Edwin Real, the camp will be held at the school’s gym. The session will run from noon to 3 p.m. Aug. 7-10.

The cost is $130 for the general skills camps and $100 for the other camps.

The fee includes a camp T-shirt, knee pads and a water bottle.

Participants will learn fundamentals, including passing, spiking and serving. In addition, offensive and defensive formations will be taught, including serve reception, blocking and digging.

Real has more than 25 years of coaching experience. Also at the camp will be Burroughs boys’ Coach Joel Brinton, who has almost 20 years of playing and coaching experience, along with former Indians’ All-CIF and all-league standouts and collegiate players Robbie Rutecki, Katie Rutecki, Caitlin Cottrell and Dani Gonzalez.

CV summer cross-country series

The final race in the Crescenta Valley High cross-country summer series will be Aug. 9 at at Crescenta Valley Park.

There is a 2-kilometer race first at 6 p.m. followed by a 3-mile competition at 6:25. All ages and ability levels are encouraged.

The cost per person is $5 and each competitor will be timed. The races will be hosted by the Crescenta Valley cross-country team.
