City sends four schools to CIF-SS cross-country finals

There will be a balance of legacy and youth when the Burbank High girls, Burroughs boys, and individual qualifiers Emily Virtue of Burroughs, Providence’s Carissa Guardado and Bellarmine-Jefferson’s Nick Montijo participate at Saturday morning’s CIF Southern Section cross-country championships at the Riverside Cross Country Course.

Guardado will lead the city first in the Division V girls’ championship at 7:45 a.m. The sophomore enters as the city’s lone female league champion after capturing the Liberty League title.

In the boys’ Division V finals at 8:25 a.m., Guards junior Montijo will get his chance. The Camino Real League champ may very be running in the final race ever for his school, which is due to close its doors for at least one year next spring.

In between, Virtue will have an opportunity to punch her ticket to a third straight state competition when she runs in the Division I championships at 8:05 a.m. alongside the Burbank High girls, who have shown great progress this season.

Lastly, the Burroughs boys and Pacific League champion Jagdeep Chahal will compete at 8:45 a.m. in the Division I finals. Burroughs finished eighth at last season’s final and entered ranked No. 11 this season.

To advance to state, a team must finish in the top seven or an individual will have to post a top-five effort through the first 20 spots not secured by an athlete from a qualifying team.

Providence tennis pair in CIF tourney

A doubles pair from the Providence High girls’ tennis team will be the lone local representative in Monday’s CIF Southern Section Individual Sectional Tournament at Carpinteria High. Check-in is at 8:30 a.m.

Senior Rosalie Bedgarian and freshman Olivia Robinson qualified for the tournament after winning the Independence League doubles title. The pair is 15-1 and went undefeated in league play with an 11-0 record.

This was only the second year of existence for the Providence program.
