Providence tennis doubles pair falls in CIF first round

There was a sense of the unknown and uncertain expectations for a Providence High girls’ tennis doubles team and its coach Monday morning.

Following the program’s revival in 2016 after a hiatus of more than three decades, Pioneers senior Rosalie Bedgarian and freshman Olivia Robinson became the first players to earn a berth in the CIF Southern Section Individual Sectional Tournament.

Unfortunately for the pair, its appearance in the tournament was short-lived.

Bedgarian and Robinson suffered a 6-1, 6-2 first-round loss to Cabrillo’s Karly Kovach and Alyssa Murray in the first day of the tourney at Carpinteria High.

“From just starting the program up again after 30 years and to get this far, I feel great,” Bedgarian said. “This was a great experience.”

The Providence pair earned a spot in the tournament after winning the Independence League doubles title.

Against the Cabrillo tandem, Bedgarian and Robinson were able to play well at times, but had problems stringing together winning points consistently.

“I feel we played well and we matched up well against them,” Robinson said. “I’m happy we played hard and gave it our all.”

The Pioneers finished the season 15-2, which included going undefeated in league at 11-0.

“I am so proud of these girls,” Providence coach Mark Pfau said. “They put some good work in and now we know what it feels like to compete at a higher talent level.

“We are looking to continue that and are looking forward to next season.”
