Burbank resident Jack Flaherty will make his Major League debut for the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday against the San Francisco Giants, according to mlb. com.

St. Louis traded pitcher Mike Leake to the Seattle Mariners on Friday, paving the way for Flaherty, a right-hander, to be called up from the triple-A Memphis Cardinals.

Flaherty, a Harvard-Westlake High graduate who was drafted in 2014 in the first round (34th overall by St. Louis), is 7-2 with a 2.74 earned-run average at Memphis. He’s struck out 85 and walked 24 in 85 1/3 innings. He flourished in August, going 4-1. Flaherty, 21, allowed seven earned runs in 31 innings and struck out 29 in five appearances in August.

In his last start Aug. 26, Flaherty allowed two runs on seven hits and struck out five in a 4-2 victory against the Iowa Cubs.

In July, Flaherty represented the United States in the Futures All-Star Game in Miami. He gave up two runs (both earned) on two hits and struck out one in one inning, but didn’t factor in the decision in USA’s 7-6 victory against the World.

Flaherty began the season with the double-A Springfield Cardinals. He went 7-2 with a 1.42 ERA in 10 appearances (all starts). Flaherty struck out 85 and walked 24 in 63 1/3 innings with Springfield of the Texas League.

When Flaherty makes his start Friday, the rookie will become one of four Harvard-Westlake pitchers to have started a game in the major leagues this season, which includes La Cañada Flintridge resident Nik Turley.
