With the score tied in the bottom of the seventh Inning, the Burroughs High baseball team put a runner in scoring position against Arcadia, but came up empty.

Again in the eighth inning, the Indians had a runner at second base with the game tied and were unable to cash in their chance.

After squandering its opportunities as well in extra innings, Arcadia finally came through with four runs in the 10th to hand the host Indians a 7-4 Pacific League loss on Friday afternoon.

It was the second league setback against the Apaches (13-8, 9-1 in league) for Burroughs (12-10, 7-3), which lost at Arcadia on Tuesday, 5-3.

“That has kind of been our season when we have the opportunities and we don’t take them,” Burroughs Coach Craig Sherwood said. “We had those opportunities, but we’re just not cashing them in. Sometimes it works for you and sometimes it doesn’t, but it seems like it hasn’t worked more than it has this year.

“But even in a game like this, we’re battling and that’s all you can ask for. The kids did the best that they could and I’m proud of them.”

The Indians took a 3-2 lead into the seventh inning. However, the Apaches tied the score with a run in the top of the seventh and Burroughs couldn’t respond in its half of the frame, as the game went into extra innings.

“There are always opportunities, we just didn’t take them today,” said Burroughs starting pitcher Nicco Chuidian, who allowed three runs and six hits across six innings. “We played our game, but it just wasn’t enough, I guess.”

The Indians scored first with two runs in the bottom of the second on a wild pitch and a run-scoring double by Brandon Giraldo (two for five).

Arcadia responded with two runs in the top of the third to knot the score at 2.

Justin Palafox doubled in the sixth inning and scored on a throwing error to give the Indians a 3-2 lead.

But Arcadia’s Jeffrey Castillo led off the top of the seventh inning with a double down the left-field line and was plated by an RBI single to center field by John Woo to knot things at 3.

After both teams squandered chances in the eighth and ninth innings, Arcadia exploded for four runs in the top of the 10th to take a 7-3 advantage.

Burroughs tallied one run in its portion of the 10th, as Palafox was hit by a pitch and eventually scored on throwing error by the catcher.

Ricky Perez was three for five for the Indians.

Burroughs, the two-time defending league champion, is currently in third place in league with four games left in the regular season. It will play a two-game series next week against league-leading Crescenta Valley and finish with two against rival Burbank.

“We still need two more wins to make the playoffs,” Sherwood said. “We have to battle back and we’ve got to try and pin a loss on CV next week and then battle Burbank. I think we can do it. I think the guys understand the mission in front of them.”
