GLENDALE — With the graduation of All-CIF Southern Section player Tristen Hull, Stefon Foster is looking to take on an expanded role for the Burroughs High boys’ basketball team.

Foster looked like he’s up to that challenge for his senior season in the winter, as he has stepped up for the Indians during summer play.

Foster took center stage Friday evening, scoring a game-high 21 points and sinking four of Burroughs’ 11 three-pointers in a 64-48 victory over Eagle Rock in the Vaquero Shootout at Glendale Community College.

It was the second win of the day for the Indians, who took care of Verdugo Hills, 79-60, in an earlier contest.

“My role this year is to push the ball and get my teammates involved,” said Foster, who tallied 16 points in the second half, including three three-pointers. “I just want to try and create opportunities and get everyone shots.

“We are a smaller team so we have to concentrate on our rebounding and boxing other teams out. …We’re using the summer to try and get better.”

Senior Carson Clarke added 12 points, six rebounds and three blocks and senior DJ Hubbell contributed 11 points.

Burroughs, which finished fifth in the Pacific League last season and had a 13-14 record, fell behind early against the Eagles in the first half. After the Indians took a 3-2 lead, they were outscored 8-0, and trailed, 10-3, with 11:51 remaining. Burroughs missed all eight of its shots during the run.

The Indians were able to fight back, however, and took a 20-19 advantage following a basket by Foster with 4:52 left. Burroughs went into halftime with a two-point lead after Clarke drained a three-pointer with one second remaining.

In the second half, Burroughs came out and took control early. The Indians let things fly from the outside and the Eagles had problems keeping pace.

“I was just trying to be more aggressive in that second half and I think we all just stepped it up,” Foster said. “We have confidence that we can shoot and make the three and we are a good outside shooting team. We all know we can make that shot.”

With its offense clicking, Burroughs went up by double digits, 42-31, on a Foster three-pointer with 10:04 remaining. The Indians’ advantage ballooned to 64-48 when Bryan Oasay converted a three with 57 seconds left.

Eagle Rock (12-14; third in the L.A. City Section Northern League last season) received 18 points from Christopher Arrazcaeta.
