Sports Roundup: Providence boys’ basketball, Burroughs boys’ soccer fall in playoffs

Santa Maria 87, Providence 79: The Pioneers saw their season end Friday evening with a loss on the road in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division V-AAA playoffs.

Providence, which placed third in the Independence League, finished the season at 19-10.

Against Santa Maria (19-7), the runner-up from the Los Padres League, the Pioneers trailed, 21-14, after one quarter. But the Saints made a big move in the second quarter, outscoring Providence, 30-16, to lead 51-30 at halftime.

Santa Maria continued to pour it on in the third quarter, increasing its advantage to 72-48. But the Pioneers battled back in the fourth, cutting the deficit to seven with less than two minutes to go.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Aliso Niguel 4, Burroughs 0: The Indians surrendered three second-half goals in the loss Friday evening on the road in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division II playoffs.

Burroughs, the runner-up from the Pacific League, ended the season at 14-8-1.

“We paid for being sick all week and we were a step slow,” Indians coach Mike Kodama said. “It was a great effort, but we struggled against a good, experienced team.”

Giving up a goal in the match’s first minute, Burroughs trailed 1-0 at the half against Aliso Niguel (10-3-1), which finished second in the South Coast League.
