Sports Roundup: Doubles sweep propels Burbank tennis past Burroughs

BOYS’ TENNIS

Burbank 16, Burroughs 2: The Bulldogs won all nine doubles sets in the Pacific League victory Tuesday afternoon at Burroughs.

“I told the guys if they play like they are supposed to play then we will be able to come out with the win,” said Burbank Coach Loi Phan, whose team improved to 5-3, 4-2 in league. “They did a pretty good job today.”

Singles player James Lee also swept his three sets for Burbank.

BASEBALL

Burbank 7, Muir 1: The Bulldogs kicked off Pacific League play Tuesday afternoon with a victory on the road.

With the score tied at 1 through six innings, Burbank scored six runs in the top of the seventh inning.Henry Leake and Abiezer Delgado drove in two runs apiece and Chris Minnick had a run batted in for the Bulldogs (5-5).

On the mound, Matt Lungaro went six six innings and gave up four hits and one run.

SOFTBALL

Burroughs 15, Pasadena 0 (five innings): The Indians were on the winning side of a lopsided result Tuesday afternoon at Olive Park in their Pacific League opener.

Pitcher Presley Miraglia went five innings, allowing three hits while striking out 11.

Burroughs, which had 12 hits, improved to 8-4.

St. Genevieve 19, Bellarmine-Jefferson 0 (five innings): The Guards opened their season Tuesday with a nonleague loss at Pelaconi Park.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Burbank d. Oaks Christian, 25-19, 25-16, 19-25, 25-20: Rory Rickey had 18 kills to pace the Bulldogs to a nonleague victory Tuesday evening on the road.

Adrian Rivera added 12 kills and Jonathan Tapan had 41 assists and 11 digs.

Paraclete d. Providence, 27-25, 25-6, 25-20: The Pioneers fell to 5-8 with the nonleague loss Monday afternoon at home.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Burroughs in Mt. Carmel Invitational: The Indians distance medley relay team placed fourth Saturday.

The team of Jagdeep Chahal (3 minutes, 18 seconds in the 1,200 meters), Sammy Duran (54.0 in the 400), Jacob Calderon (2:08 in 800) and Alexander Hirsch (4:23 in 1,600) finished in 10:45.48.

Other top-10 finishers for Burroughs were Timothy Wells in the 3,200 (seventh, 9:39.00) and Alexander Hirsh in the 1,600 (ninth, 4:25.11).

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Burroughs in Mt. Carmel Invitational: Emily Virtue ran to a third-place finish Saturday.

Virtue finished third in the 1,600 meters in 5 minutes, 2 seconds, placing her second on the school’s all-time list in the event.
