Sports Roundup: Burroughs girls run to 2nd at Bell-Jeff Invite

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Burroughs at Bellarmine-Jefferson Invitational: Even without the services of star senior Emily Virtue, the Indians turned in a strong effort Saturday afternoon at Griffith Park.

Burroughs finished second in the Jimmy Balders Invitational run with 67 points as the squad was just edged by Palisades (66).

Burroughs’ scoring five all finished within the top 25, led by freshman Jordan Guzman (12th, 19:45.9). Junior Vanessa Reveles (15th, 19:53.9), senior Catrina Villalpando (16th, 20:00.6), sophomore Ceci Whitney (19th, 20:17.5) and sophomore Taylor Lombardo (25th, 20:27.6) rounded out the scoring.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Burroughs, Bellarmine-Jefferson at Bellarmine-Jefferson Invitational: The Indians finished eighth in the Doug Speck Invitational run at Griffith Park on Saturday morning.

Burroughs tallied 191 points in a race dominated by Loyola, which totaled 16 points.

Senior Jeron Straker finished 27th for the Indians in 16:13.1, while Jimmy Nealis (31st, 16:25.7), Carlos Ponce (39th, 16:34.4) and Cory Ellis (41st, 16:38.9) all posted top-50 efforts.

The Guards finished 12th in the blue race with 317 points in a race won by Santa Maria St. Joseph (90).

Junior Nick Montijo turned in a strong effort as he placed fourth in 16:13.3, while Sebastian Ceja-Solis took 22nd (17:43.8).
