Sports Roundup: Burroughs volleyball outlasts Arcadia

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Burroughs def. Arcadia: Burroughs earned a 25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 25-21 Pacific League road win Tuesday.

Jose Solano finished with 51 assists for Burroughs (3-0 in league). Cole Kaitz had 27 kills for the Indians and Diego Rosal added 17.

Providence def. Claremont: Visiting Providence picked up a 25-21, 25-23, 30-28 nonleague win Tuesday.

Providence (9-1) received 21 digs from Weston Tengan, 18 assists from Gerald Martin, seven kills from Zack Pikhart and five blocks from Nick Tidik.

BASEBALL

Milken Community 8, Providence 6: The Pioneers saw their comeback bid fall short and dropped their Liberty League opener Tuesday on the road.

Providence (2-3) trailed, 8-1, before scoring five runs in the seventh.

Providence received run-scoring singles from Joey Blanchette, Elias Ferguson and Jacob McGorrian.

Burroughs 3, Carter 1: The Indians scored two runs in the seventh inning to pull out a Babe Herman Tournament win Monday afternoon.

The winning run was plated after Brian Garcia legged out an infield single, stole second, moved to third on a bloop single to right field by Julian Jaramillo and scored on a fielder’s choice by Revin Diego (double, run batted in).

Nathan Palafox also drove in a run for Burroughs. Xavier Dubon got the win, throwing 1 1/3 innings in relief. Four Indians pitchers yielded five total hits.

Burroughs 11, Birmingham 0 (five innings): Pitcher Nicco Chuidian tossed an abbreviated shutout in a Babe Herman Tournament game Saturday on the road.

Chuidian threw five innings, allowing three hits, striking out five and not walking a batter.

The Burroughs offense, which had 10 hits, was paced by Jacob Barrera, who drove in six runs. He went three for four and drove in runs on a double in the first, a single in the third and a double in the fourth. Revin Diego was two for two with a walk, two runs scored and two RBI.

Birmingham 18, Burbank 0 (five innings): The Bulldogs fell on the road Monday afternoon in the Babe Herman Tournament,

BOYS’ GOLF

Milken Community 236, Providence 240: The Pioneers (1-2) fell Tuesday in a Liberty League match at Woodley Lakes Golf Course.

On Monday, Milken Community defeated Providence, 247-251, at the same venue.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Burroughs in California Relays: Emily Virtue was a double winner Saturday at El Camino College.

Virtue won the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 19.8 seconds and the 3,200 in 11:14.60. In the girls’ pole vault, Alex Akobian and Elizabeth Switxer tied for second with 11-feet efforts.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Burroughs in California Relays: Jagdeep Chahal won two races Saturday at El Camino College.

Chahal was first in the 800 meters in 1 minute, 57.76 seconds and the 3,200 in 9:23.70. Alexander Hirsch placed third in a pair of races, the 1,600 (4:25.44) and the 3,200 (9:25.89).

SOFTBALL

Burroughs 9, Thousand Oaks 1: The Indians earned a win Saturday in the Saugus Tournament.

Providence 22, Trinity Classical 1: Francesca Maravilla had four hits, including a home run, to lead the Pioneers to a nonleague win on Tuesday and Celeste Lee added three hits.
