Sports Roundup: Bell-Jeff cross-country’s Zavala wins at Mt. SAC

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Bell-Jeff, Providence at Mt. San Antonio College Invitational: Guards junior Valerie Zavala once again shined on Friday’s first day of the prestigious invite as she won the Division V red race in a mark of 19 minutes, 22 seconds.

Zavala, who qualified out of last year’s CIF Southern Section Division V finals at Mt. SAC to state, led the Guards to a second-place finish as a team, as North Tahoe won the race, 47-82.

Fellow Bell-Jeff junior Caitlyn Couch was second overall in 19:35, while junior Claire Borot (28th, 22:48), sophomore Dalila Rincon (35th, 23:16) and junior Cosette Balmy (43rd, 23:38) closed out the scoring.

Though Providence only ran two individual runners, both were successful, as freshman Carissa Guardado finished 13th in the Division V blue race in 23:19 and junior Milena Mooradian finished 46th in 26:32.

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Providence at Mt. San Antonio College Invitational: The Pioneers fielded a full team for competition on Friday’s first day of action in Walnut.

Providence placed 19th with 514 points and was led by junior Brian Chan (90th, 21:41).

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Burroughs d. Muir, 25-10, 25-11, 25-7: The Indians stayed in second place in the Pacific League with the victory Thursday afternoon on the road.

Burroughs is 19-5, 11-2 in league, one match ahead of Crescenta Valley (10-3 in league) with one match remaining. The Indians will finish league play at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Burbank.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Crescenta Valley 13, Burbank 11: The Bulldogs dropped a Pacific League home match Thursday afternoon.

Burbank is 9-12, 1-4 in league.
