Sports roundup: Burroughs baseball takes care of Hoover in league win

BASEBALL

Burroughs 8, Hoover 1: Jesse Galindo twirled a five-hitter, while striking out five and walking just one for the Pacific League victory at home on Tuesday.

Burroughs (16-6, 9-2 in league) got three hits, three runs batted in and two runs from Matthew Diaz. Justin Palafox and Mitch Lefevre added two hits and a run each, while Omar Tejeda had two RBI and a run.

Burbank 4, Muir 3: The Bulldogs clinched fourth place and the Pacific League’s final automatic playoff spot with a victory on Tuesday afternoon.

With the win, Burbank improved to 8-10 and 7-4 in league.

Trailing in the seventh inning, 3-2, the Bulldogs scored two runs on a walk-off double by Matt Shaugabay. Pitcher Danny Porras tossed a two-hitter for Burbank.

Providence 12, Yeshiva 0 (five innings): The Pioneers improved to 13-7, 7-0 in the Liberty League with the win Monday at Venice High.

Thomas Keller threw a no-hitter in the abbreviated game that was called due to the mercy rule. Keller went five innings, had seven strikeouts and allowed only one ball to leave the infield via a flyout to center field. Keller was also two for four at the plate with two runs batted in. Sean Holt was three for four with three RBI, Steven Knezevich and Marco Angrisani had two hits apiece and Nicholas Knezevich scored three runs on two walks and one hit.

“We talked all year about playing our best baseball in May,” Providence Coach Steve Knez said. “We have three games left in the regular season and a league title on the line. This is the perfect time for us to be at our best.”

The Pioneers host Yeshiva Thursday at Foy Park and square off against undefeated Buckley in two games next week.

La Salle 6,9, Burroughs 3,4: The Indians fell in the nonleague doubleheader Saturday afternoon at home.

In the first game, Jason Whaley was two for three with a triple and two runs batted in for Burroughs. In the second game, Whaley, Erik Gonzalez and Matthew Rudas drove in runs for the Indians.

SOFTBALL

Burroughs 13, Hoover 0 (five innings): Presley Miraglia threw an abbreviated no-hitter with 13 strikeouts as the first-place Indians continued their undefeated run through the Pacific League with Tuesday win on the road.

Brianna Devellano had three hits and Kaitlin Okimoto had three hits, including a home run, for Burroughs (18-4, 11-0 in league).

Burbank 19, Muir 1 (five innings): The Bulldogs improved to 10-14, 7-4 in the Pacific League with Tuesday’s win on the road.

Emily Monterrey was two for three with three runs scored, Sarah Garelick drove in five runs and Reace Rushing had a triple with two RBI. Pitcher Alex Davis went the distance, striking out six and allowing three hits.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Burbank 3, Arcadia 0: For the first time in program history, the Bulldogs won 20 matches after defeating the visiting Apaches, 25-16, 25-23, 25-23, on Tuesday afternoon.

Burbank improved to 20-11 and 9-3 in league, which clinched second place.

Brandon Alba had 10 kills and six digs, Aram Krakirian had nine kills and five digs and Jonathan Tapan had 27 assists.

Providence d. Glendale Adventist Academy, 25-14, 25-16, 25-9; 25-18, 25-14, 25-14: The Pioneers swept the rare Liberty League doubleheader Monday at home.

Providence (12-8, 8-3 in league) is in third place in league.

In the two matches, Michael Buenaventura led the Pioneers with 19 kills and 18 digs. Andrew Harris added 13 kills and four blocks, Ethan Jacobson had nine kills and five blocks, Jansen Nuñez had 25 digs, Robert Chua contributed 11 digs, Chris Lingat had 53 assists and 10 digs and Kieran McGroarty had seven aces and six kills.
