Sports Roundup: Locals run with best at Foot Locker regional

BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Alexander Hirsch at Foot Locker West Regional: The Burroughs runner finished 64th at the Foot Locker Cross Country Championships West Regional at Mount San Antonio College on Saturday.

Hirsh finished in 16 minutes 38.8 seconds.

GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY

Emily Virtue, Caitlyn Couch at Foot Locker West Regional: Burroughs’ Virtue, the reigning All-Area Girls’ Cross-Country Runner of the Year, placed 95th in Saturday’s Foot Locker Cross Country Championships West Regional at Mount San Antonio College.

The junior, running in the seeded girls’ race, finished in a time of 19 minutes 59.6 seconds.

Bellarmine-Jefferson junior Couch, the Camino Real League champion, took 28th in 21:09.1 in the junior girls’ race.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Bellarmine-Jefferson 49, St. Genevieve 40: The Guards closed out a 3-1 run in the Paul Sutton Tournament at Providence High Saturday morning with a victory.

With the win, the Guards improved to 5-1 this season and rebounded from a 38-27 tournament-opening loss to Village Christian with wins over Canoga Park (57-5 score), Holy Martyrs (42-29) and St. Genevieve.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Thousand Oaks 66, Burroughs 60: It came down to the wire, but the Indians dropped a close one in the championship game of the Buckley Tournament on Saturday evening.

Senior forward Tristen Hull led Burroughs (3-1) with 23 points and was named to the Buckley All-Tournament team, while senior Austin Marx added 13 points.

“I’m beyond pleased with how we played in this tournament,” Burroughs Coach Allan Ellis said. “We’re working hard and defending and we’re doing a lot of things the way successful teams are supposed to do them. The future is bright.”

Burbank 61, Oaks Christian 55: The Bulldogs closed out the Burbank Winter Tournament with an impressive win on Saturday over Oaks Christian to improve to 5-1 on the season.

On Friday, the Bulldogs defeated Roosevelt, 64-40.

Lawndale 65, Providence 35: It was a tough finish to the Paul Sutton Tournament for the Pioneers, who were defeated in Saturday afternoon’s finale.

Providence (1-3) opened up the tournament on Tuesday with a 69-28 victory over Aveson Global Leadership Academy, but dropped three straight after that win.
