Sports Roundup: Providence boys’ basketball edges AGBU to stay perfect in league

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Providence 42, Armenian General Benevolent Union 40: A balanced scoring attack for the Pioneers prevailed on Saturday at Providence High as the hosts improved to 4-0 in the Liberty League with the close win.

AJ Bautista had 11 points, Kirk Helling added 10 and Bryce Whitaker turned in nine for the Pioneers (12-8).

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Providence 53, Armenian General Benevolent Union 31: The Pioneers clamped down on defense to earn the Liberty League win over Canoga Park AGBU on Saturday afternoon at home.

Providence held AGBU to single digits scoring in all but one quarter.

Ariel Gordillo led the Pioneers (11-9, 4-1 in league) with 21 points and seven steals and Christa Kurkjian posted 16 points, six rebounds and four steals.

Burbank 49, Heritage Christian 36: Less than 24 hours removed from a momentous Pacific League win over rival Burroughs, the Bulldogs won again in nonleague play.

Osanna Tirityan had 13 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals to pave the way for Burbank (12-11), with Emily Pennings scoring 11 points, which included three three-pointers. Ana Sarkisyan contributed seven rebounds, two assists and two steals and Sarah Sarquiz had eight rebounds.
