Burbank able to battle back

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Burbank d. Crescenta Valley, 23-25, 21-25, 25-14, 25-22, 16-14: Despite dropping the first two games, the Bulldogs battled back to take three straight and win the Pacific League match Thursday at home.

Stephanie Eskander paced Burbank (2-1 in league) with 14 kills and five aces. Teammate Reilly Brennan had seven kills, Jamie Gonzalez had seven kills and five aces, Stefanie Lin had 12 digs and Emily Bishop had seven digs.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Burroughs 13, Glendale 5: The Indians rolled to a home Pacific League victory Tuesday against the Nitros.

No. 1 singles Kathy Henry swept her three sets by 6-0 scores and No. 2 Abby Kelley also swept, 6-1, 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) to help Burroughs gain the win.

BOYS’ WATER POLO

Burbank in San Marino Tournament: The Bulldogs captured their second tourney championship of the season by winning the event Sept. 17.

Burbank defeated Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 15-12, and San Marino, 15-6, in pool play before defeating Mark Keppel, 20-5, and Crespi, 13-10, in the championship round.

CROSS-COUNTRY

Providence girls in the Providence Invitational: The Pioneers went 1-2-3 in the race to win the team championship in the event Sept. 20 at Carson Park.

Providence was first with 30 points and was followed by Hillcrest Christian (43), Holy Family (76), Armenian General Benevolent Union (79) and Albert Einstein (no score).

Kelly Castillo won the 2.6-mile race in 18 minutes 3 seconds. She was followed by teammates Jaii Jiang (second; 18:04), Drew Tacchino (third; 18:15), Madeleine Garibaldi (ninth; 20:41), Samantha Granados (15th; 22:15) and Chelsea Lopez (17th; 22:55) for the Pioneers’ scorers.

Providence boys’ in Liberty League Meet No. 1: The Pioneers placed fifth in the event Sept. 15 at Carson Park.

In double-duel-meet-scoring, Viewpoint (10) was first and was followed by Buckley (eight), Oakwood (six), Holy Martyrs (four), the Pioneers (two) and Yeshiva (no score).

Providence’s top finisher was freshman Marcus Lovette, who navigated the 2.6-mile course in 13 minutes 55 seconds. Lovette broke the freshman course record set in 1990.

The other Pioneers scorers were Aaron Zeigler (21st; 16:18), Tobert Tolentino (28th; 17:12), Eddie Lopez (29th; 17:18) and Eddie Mercado (33rd; 17:35).

GIRLS’ GOLF

Crescenta Valley 205, Burbank 244: Bulldog Haley Pirruccello earned medalist honors by firing a 38 Wednesday in a nonleague match at Hansen Dam Golf Course.

Tess Apinchapong had a 41 for Burbank.
