San Fernando Valley roundup: Immigration clinic, Pacoima gang member convicted of Valley robberies

Good morning, readers! Today is Saturday, October 20. The Los Angeles City Council is looking for ways to deal with a multi-million-dollar deficit.

Two proposals to increase taxes might appear on the March ballot, reports the Daily News.

A clinic that runs until 5 p.m. today will help young residents fill out ‘deferred action’ immigration paperwork, according to the L.A. Times. A program recently approved by President Obama allows those under 30 years old to stay and work in the country legally for two years. The clinic is held on Vista Middle School at 15040 Roscoe Blvd. in North Hills.

A gang member was convicted Friday of several armed robberies in the Valley, reports the L.A. Times. The Pacoima man was found guilty on all charges, including assault on a peace officer.

It’s almost November and the race between Reps. Howard Berman and Brad Sherman to represent a new district in the San Fernando Valley is still causing excitement, or perhaps havoc. A confrontation between the two Democrats last week at Pierce Community College is the talk of the town. But Andrew Lachman, former president of Democrats for Israel-Los Angeles, doesn’t criticize either candidate. “There is a lot of angst over this race in the Jewish community because we have these two great congressmen, and whatever happens is a loss to our community,” he told the Washington Times.
