TSA official offers some info

The Transportation Security Administration was created in the wake of 9/11 to strengthen the security of the nation’s transportation systems while ensuring the freedom of movement for people and commerce.

TSA operations at Bob Hope Airport began Oct.1, 2002. TSA has evolved into an agency that uses intelligence, innovative technologies and a highly trained workforce to keep the traveling public safe.

Through the Secure Flight program, TSA vets all passengers flying into, out of and within the U.S. against government watch lists. On 9/11, less than 3% of bags were screened for explosives. Today, all checked and carry-on bags are screened for explosives and other threats. At Bob Hope Airport, TSA uses advanced imaging technology to detect metallic and non-metallic threats, including explosives.

Transportation security officers — the most important piece of the multi-layered security system that is in place — represent the entire Burbank, Glendale and Pasadena community. Roughly 35% have been with TSA for 10 years, and nearly 25% of the TSA workforce nationwide has served in the U.S. military.

Last year, more than 4 million passengers passed through the security checkpoints at Bob Hope. So far this year, TSA officers have identified thousands of items prohibited at the Burbank security checkpoints, including 14 firearms, seven of them in checked baggage.

As we move away from a one-size-fits all model, we are implementing risk-based security concepts to further enhance security by focusing efforts on travelers considered high-risk and about whom the agency knows less. TSA Pre?is an expedited screening initiative at more than 20 airports nationwide. Other risk-based security measures including modified screening procedures for passengers 12 and younger and 75 and older have been implemented.

TSA will continue to play a critical role in staying ahead of determined adversaries. We appreciate the ongoing support and cooperation of the aviation industry and the traveling public as we continue to strengthen transportation security.
