Burbank girls’ basketball has no answer for No. 2 Canyon Springs

The Burbank High girls’ basketball team ran into a buzzsaw when it took on second-seeded Canyon Springs in a CIF Southern Section Division I-A second-round playoff game.

And to make matters worse, the Bulldogs had to take on the Cougars in front of their home crowd.

The end result wasn’t pretty for Burbank. The Bulldogs were hounded by a torrid Canyon Springs defense and an offense that almost scored at will in an 85-43 loss.

The defeat ends the season for Burbank (16-13), which finished third in the Pacific League. Canyon Springs (17-9) is the No. 3 team from the competitive Inland Valley League.

“They were just unrelenting and they kept coming at us,” Burbank Coach Bruce Breeden said of the Cougars. “They were so athletic and I think they kept pressing us even in the fourth quarter. They are a very good team.”

Burbank received 13 points from Ashley Linda and Alicia McCord added nine.

Canyon Springs made things difficult for the Bulldogs from the opening tip-off. In the first quarter, Burbank was outscored, 28-10.

The Bulldogs had a little better showing in the second quarter, as they were only outscored, 18-12. However, the Cougars took a 46-22 advantage into halftime.

“They have three very good players and we just couldn’t stop them,” Breeden said.

The Cougars dispelled any notion of a possible Burbank comeback attempt by outscoring the Bulldogs, 24-10, in the third.
