BURBANK — Competing on its home course for the first time this season in a Pacific League match, the Burroughs High girls’ golf team appeared poised.

After earning third-place finishes in the first two league matches, Burroughs looked to solidify its position for a top-three automatic spot to reach the playoffs for the first time in two seasons on Wednesday afternoon at De Bell Golf Club.

Burroughs accomplished the feat after carding a 221, edging Arcadia by two strokes on the rain-soaked course for a season-best second-place finish in a league match.

“I’m extremely happy with the way things are working for the team,” Burroughs Coach Greg Everhart said. “We were looking to shoot 215 and we just missed it by six strokes.

“We’re excited about where we are right now. I thought we played much better and we keep seeing improvement.”

Rachel Oh of La Cañada had the best overall performance among area participants, as she carded a five-over-par 41. Annie Kong of Arcadia finished first with a 35. San Marino, which won the league championship last season, finished with a 199 to win its third straight league match. Crescenta Valley took fourth with a 251, followed by La Cañada (269) and short-handed Burbank (309).

The Indians did wellWednesday, though none of their players shot lower than 42. Ashley Phelps led the way for the Indians with a 42, followed by Maddie Riggs (43), Raelinn Arnold (44), Annie Adachi (47) and Katy Kueppala (45).

“They are lowering their scores, “said Everhart, whose team took fourth in league last season. “They know they can do better.”

Crescenta Valley was led by Laura Perez, who had a 46. The Falcons, who placed third in league last season, got a 48 from Emily Redecker, 50 from Gloria Namkung, 52 from Cathlin Junior and 55 from Michela Labellarte.

First-year Crescenta Valley Coach Grant Clark, whose team will host the next league match at 1:45 p.m. Sept. 23 at Brookside Golf Course No. 2 in Pasadena, said the Falcons are trying to make marked improvement each match.

“There’s a lot to take away,” Clark said. “They are out there competing, but they are just a little frustrated with the way they played today.

“They know they are more than capable of turning in better rounds. They know what they need to work on and we’ll look for a better showing at Brookside.”

La Cañada had four players competing for the first time this season at the varsity level under first-year coach Kyle Turner.

The Spartans, led by Oh’s 41, got a 47 from Lucielle Park, 58 from Lexi Dreyfuss, 60 from Grace Mekkekian and 63 from Emilee Hermann.

“Our scores are getting better,” Turner said. “We just need some more accuracy.”

Burbank had just three players record scores. Amy Tran finished with a 42, followed by Olga-Marie Davis (52) and Alexis Poche (53).

“We’re staying with it,” Burbank Coach Branco Sevic said. “We’re just looking for improvement so that it will help us out for next year.”
