CIF track prelims: Schwartz, Fernandez highlight qualifiers
Four local schools participated Saturday in the CIF Southern Section Division prelims at various locations across Southern California. The following is a roundup of those who advanced to the CIF finals next Saturday.
DIVISION I
BOYS
Burroughs, Burbank at Trabuco Hills High: Matt Schwartz of Burroughs hit a mark of 15 feet and advanced to the finals on May 24 at Cerritos College. Schwartz was the lone Indian to move on, finishing in an eight-way tie for first.
Also doing well for Burroughs were Kent Truong, who had a mark of 14-6 in the pole vault for 13th place. Robert Brennan took 12th in the 400 (49.40). Burroughs’ 4x400 relay team of Brennan, Augusto Corea, Ricky Mendez and Everth Vargas clocked 3 minutes 25 seconds to take 15th.
No Bulldogs advanced to the finals.
GIRLS
Burbank, Burroughs at Trabuco Hills High: Burbank’s Candela Fernandez set school records in the 1,600- and 3,200-meter events at the meet to advance to the CIF finals May 24. Fernandez clocked 10 minutes 57.51 seconds in the 3,200 to take sixth and 5:00.03 in the 1,600 for eighth.
Burbank’s 4x100-relay team of Julia Newton, Keren Zepeda, Felicia Tomitsa and Haleigh Cusumano set a school record in 48.90, but did not advance, finishing 18th.
No Indians advanced to the finals.
DIVISION IV
BOYS
Bellarmine-Jefferson and Providence at Carpinteria High: London Webster of Bell-Jeff qualified in two events to move on to the finals May 24 at Cerritos College.
Webster finished sixth in the 200-meter race in 22.72 and clocked 11.20 to place seventh in the 100 for 18th place.
No Pioneers advanced to the finals.
GIRLS
Providence, Bellarmine-Jefferson at Carpinteria High: No Pioneers or Guards advanced to the CIF Finals on May 24 at Cerritos College.
