Community: Luncheon benefits sorority sisters

Share

Glendale Area Alumnae Panhellenic raises funds each year to provide scholarships to young women who are members of sororities or high school seniors who plan to attend four-year universities or colleges.

The next event will be the 67th annual Scholarship Luncheon at 11 a.m. on March 21 at Oakmont Country Club. In 2014, the volunteers raised and granted more than $6,000 in scholarship awards.

Ariane Sadanaga, 21, has received the Panhellenic scholarship for two years. She is a 2012 graduate of Burbank High School and attends Loyola Marymount University in Los Angeles, majoring in political science and Asian Pacific studies. She is a member of Delta Delta Delta (Tri Delta) sorority.

She uses the scholarship to cover sorority dues and gifts for the younger sorority sisters she mentors. She is the new-member educator for her sorority and helps pledges become full-time members. It is rewarding to watch the pledges grow, Sadanaga said.

“You get to see the girls come in at recruitment and see how they become more acclimated to Tri Delta and their pledge class — which is the class of fellow students who are trying to become members,” she said. “My reward is when I hear them say they want to give back to the next class coming into the sorority.”

The guest speaker at the fundraiser will be Alice Bolstad, a landscape designer from Armstrong Garden Centers. Her talk will focus on water-wise ways to revitalize a garden. There will be raffle prizes and a silent auction.
