Zonta changes format to military women of the year

The Zonta Club of Burbank Area is changing the format for its Woman of the Year event this year, honoring three individuals under the theme “Women In The Military: Past, Present & Future.”

The luncheon begins at 11:30 a.m. Nov. 6 in the Mountain View Room of the Castaway. The “Woman of the Year” is an annual event sponsored by Zonta to honor exemplary women in Burbank who make outstanding contributions to the community.

This celebration will feature three distinguished women representing all women from the Burbank area serving our country in the past, present and future.

Representing the past is Doris Vick, a longtime Burbank resident and community activist whose rank was Pharmacist Mate 2nd Class in the Navy during World War II. In 1966, Vick launched Operation Cookie Lift, which provided more than 3,300 pounds of cookies to servicemen during the Vietnam War. In 1970, she started the dental program at the North Valley Occupational Center for the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Representing the present is Sgt. Tiana Yonan, USAF Operation Iraqi Freedom veteran, who served as fire engineer and emergency medical technician and remains an inactive reservist. A graduate of Burbank High School, Yonan continues her service as a firefighter/EMT at Hill Air Force Base in Utah.

Representing the future is Sabrina Baylor, CDT, UCLA ROTC. Baylor joined the National Guard in 2007 and after basic and advanced training, transferred to UCLA. She will graduate in 2011 earning the bar of Second Lieutenant to be commissioned into the California Army National Guard as an intelligence officer.

“These women embody all the qualities Zonta evokes — strong, independent, caring, empathetic and non-traditional,” said Zonta Club of Burbank Area President Brenda Lantieri. “We are grateful for their service and look forward to honoring them and all the Burbank-area women who have given and will give of themselves to keep our country strong and safe.”

The Zonta Club invites former service members and the community to join in this first-of-its-kind celebration of the important role of local women in the military. Luncheon reservations and sponsorship opportunities are available by calling Grace Farenbaugh at (818) 846-1927 or e-mailing glfaren@aol.com.

Tickets are $50 each in advance. No tickets will be sold at the door.

The Zonta Club of Burbank Area works to improve the lives of women and their families through service and advocacy in our community and around the world. The club was chartered in 1936 by Zonta International, a worldwide service organization of executives and professionals working to advance the status of women. Zonta welcomes new members.
