The driver who died after a Metrolink train collided with his vehicle in Burbank on Tuesday was identified as a 79-year-old man named Fawaz Khalil, coroner’s officials said.

Khalil, who was alone in the car, had been transported to Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center in critical condition Tuesday afternoon after a southbound Metrolink train collided with his sedan at the intersection of San Fernando Boulevard and Buena Vista Street in Burbank.

Khalil was heading southbound on Buena Vista and reportedly failed to stop for a crossing arm that was coming down when his car was struck on the passenger’s side, said Los Angeles County Assistant Chief Coroner Ed Winter.

Khalil was pronounced dead just before 4 p.m. on Tuesday at Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center, Winter said.

An autopsy is pending to determine the cause of death, and no further details on his injuries were available.
