From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., police will be collecting unused or expired medications in an attempt to prevent drug abuse or theft.

Rates of prescription drug abuse in the United States are “alarmingly high,” said Burbank Police Officer Joshua Kendrick in a statement.

“Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse and abuse,” he said.

Last October, the Drug Enforcement Administration collected 324 tons of prescription drugs at more than 4,000 sites nationwide.

The local drug take-back event will be held in the parking lot behind the station at 200 N. Third St.
