Five handguns believed to have been stolen were recovered during a traffic stop in Burbank on Sunday, police said.
A 36-year-old North Hollywood man, identified by police as Sunny Coban, was pulled over in the area of Empire Avenue and Valpreda Street at about 6:20 p.m. for reportedly not having a front license plate, said Burbank Police Lt. Eddie Ruiz.
UPDATE (April 23, 2:05 p.m.): The investigation revealed the guns were not stolen, said Burbank Police Sgt. Darin Ryburn.
While speaking with Coban, who was reportedly going to the shooting range, police learned the driver was transporting weapons in the back seat of his car, Ruiz said.
Five unloaded handguns were recovered in an unlocked case in the back seat. One gun reportedly had the serial number removed and the rest were registered to other people, though Coban allegedly claimed he owned them, Ruiz said.
Coban was arrested on suspicion of receiving stolen property. He was released after posting $20,000 bail and is due in court next month.
