Late goal lifts Burbank boys’ soccer to victory

BOYS’ SOCCER

Burbank 1, Arcadia 0: The Bulldogs scored the match’s only goal in the final minute Friday to pull out the win in the Pacific League opener for both teams.

Orbel Golanians, who was brought up from the junior varsity team, scored on an assist from Dennis Palacio to lift Burbank (3-2).

“We had only 13 guys for the game, and two of them were on the bench banged up,” Burbank Coach Loi Phan said. “I thought it was a very good effort from the guys.”

Freshman goalkeeper Andrew Hank recorded the shutout.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Burroughs 6, Glendale 0: The Indians began Pacific League play Friday with a lopsided victory at Memorial Field.

Brittany Mata had a hat trick and Taylor Bailey, Brooke Hazard, Alexis Mendias, Emma Pineiro and Brianna Matallana had goals for the Indians.

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Burroughs 65, St. Monica 57: Sidney Ortega had 21 points and three steals Monday to pace the Indians to the Gold Division Championship in their own West Coast Holiday Festival.

In the win, Davina Del Castillo had 15 rebounds and seven assists, Aysia Shellmire had 14 points and 11 rebounds and Bailee Trotta had 13 points.

Ortega and Del Castillo earned all-tournament honors for Burroughs.

BOYS’ BASKETBALL

Glendale 62, Burroughs 46: The Indians couldn’t win their Pacific League opener Friday night, falling to the Nitros on the road.

Lawrence White scored 17 points for Burroughs (10-3).

Burbank 52, Arcadia 46: Andy Yankyan scored 20 points to help pace the Bulldogs to a win Friday night in their Pacific League opener at home.

“We got a little complacent in the fourth quarter, but a win’s a win,” Burbank first-year Coach Jerry DeLaurie said.

Burbank (9-5) led at the half, 31-16.
