A house fire in Burbank early Sunday morning ripped through the roof and caused an estimated $500,000 in damage, authorities said.

At 3:40 a.m. Sunday, Burbank firefighters responded to a hillside home at 3147 Mesa Verde Drive, where a fire had ripped through the first floor garage, second floor and attic of the home, according to Burbank Fire Capt. Peter Hendrickson.

“The fire was completely through the roof,” Hendrickson said, adding that neighbors who reported the blaze guessed flames were burning 40 feet into the air. “This was a big fire.”

Twenty-three firefighters conducted search and rescue, fire attack and salvage operations, Hendrickson said. The fire was contained to the home and didn’t move to any other structures or nearby brush.

The blaze was reportedly knocked down at 4:30 a.m. Burbank police assisted with crowd and traffic control.

No civilian or firefighter injuries were reported, as the homeowners were out of town.

The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
