On the Town: Rain doesn’t stop Flock fans from roosting

Share

Inclement weather serves as an allure for sea gulls, and the rains of last Saturday evening drew out a flock of them, along with fans of 1980s pop music who braved the storm to catch A Flock of Seagulls at the Starlight Bowl.

While the Flock’s over-the-top bleached and teased hairstyles are now long gone, fans of the new wave group who scored a 1982 Top 10 hit with “I Ran (So Far Away),” donned rain gear and huddled under umbrellas for an evening that transported them back in time to those crazy hairdos and the height of the MTV era.

The first time in remembered history that rain fell on a Starlight Bowl summer concert crowd, the considerably lighter-than-usual assemblage seemed unfazed by the wet weather as they danced and sang along with the Flock’s lead singer and founder Mike Score and his mates, lead guitarist Joe Rodriguez, bassist Pando and drummer Michael Brahm.

The evening — which opened with a performance by Video Star, a high energy 1980s theme band — was the third of the Starlight Bowl’s nine 2015 summer concert series.

The show next week, a special Thursday concert, is billed as “A Very Special Evening at the Starlight Bowl.” It will be a free concert starring Captain Cardiac and the Coronaries staged to honor the delegations from Zimbabwe and Botswana that Burbank will be hosting for the Special Olympics World Games Los Angeles 2015.

Made possible by the sponsorship of the Worthe Real Estate Group, the evening will include a formal preshow welcome to the delegates by Burbank Mayor Bob Frutos.
