Sports Roundup: Providence girls’ basketball fades down stretch in tourney game

GIRLS’ BASKETBALL

Kennedy 47, Providence 46: The Pioneers were outscored, 17-4, in the fourth quarter and were defeated in the opening round of the Burroughs Magnolia Park Optimist Tournament on Tuesday.

After outscoring Kennedy, 23-7, in the third quarter, Providence went into the fourth with a 42-30 advantage.

Katia Dabbaghian paced the Pioneers with 15 points. Teammate Estelle Glorioso chipped in nine points and Bea Benedicto grabbed seven rebounds.

BOYS’ SOCCER

South Pasadena 3, Burroughs 2: The Indians couldn’t hold on to an early lead Tuesday in dropping the nonleague match on the road.

Burroughs’ Michael Conrad opened the scoring in the 25th minute with the first goal of the contest.

However, five minutes later South Pasadena’s Andrew Moreno knocked in a throw-in from junior forward Heven Gomez to tie the score at 1. In the 37th minute, Gomez scored his second goal of the contest.

Jorman Herrera scored Burroughs’ other goal in the 55th minute.

Providence 2, Sierra Canyon 1: Sarkis Shaginian and Keerati Asawalapsakun scored goals for the Pioneers on Monday to lead them to a nonleague victory at Granada Hills High.

Providence 3, Oakwood 2: The Pioneers opened Liberty League play Dec. 8 with a win at Glendale college. Sarkis Shaginian scored two goals and Steven Villeda added one for Providence.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Providence 6, Yeshiva 0: It was a fine start to the Liberty League campaign by the Pioneers, who had little trouble notching a victory Dec. 11 at Glendale college.

Liz Velez paced Providence with a hat trick. Brittany Uyeno, Rose Avakian and Ally Casella all tallied one goal each.
