The Burbank Police Foundation on Tuesday awarded six local students each with $1,000 scholarships in honor of fallen Burbank Police Officer Matthew Pavelka.

The recipients include six high school students: Andrew Adriatico, Viva Parsa, Davion Barker, Nadia Alcocer, Maryanne Amour and Haley Ross.

Pavelka was killed 11 years ago after an exchange of gunfire during a routine stop outside the Ramada Inn in Burbank. He’d been on the force just 10 months.

Shortly after, donations began pouring in for Pavelka’s family. His parents, Mike and Sue Pavelka, asked that all donations be used to “promote the building of future leaders,” according to the Burbank Police Department.

The students will be each awarded $1,000 upon proof of completion of a quarter or semester at a junior college or university.

“They were all outstanding,” said Michael Hastings, president of the foundation, of all the applicants and winners.
