Roundup: Dabbaghian sets new Providence mark in cross-country

Providence vs. Bellarmine-Jefferson: In an informal, non-scoring event Wednesday at Carson Park, the Pioneers’ Katia Dabbaghian set a Providence record on its home course.

Dabbaghian, an All-CIF Southern Section girls’ basketball player, navigated the 2.6-mile course in 17 minutes, 13 seconds in a single race that combined boys’ and girls’ runners. Dabbaghian, who placed fifth, broke her own record of 17:27 from 2012.

The race was won by Providence’s Lalo Fisher in 15:30. Bell-Jeff’s Nick Becerra was second in 15:34. The top girls’ finisher was the Guards’ Caitlyn Couch, who clocked 16:22.

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

Alemany def. Providence, 25-12, 25-23, 25-12: The Pioneers opened their season Wednesday with a nonleague road loss.

Senior Jenny Nardoni had eight assists and seven digs and junior Nikka Adraneda had 14 digs for Providence.

GIRLS’ GOLF

Golden Valley 207, Burbank 237: Irene Maemura fired a one-over-par 32 for the Bulldogs in a nonleague match Wednesday at El Cariso Golf Course.

Amy Tran had a 43, Alexis Poche had a 48, Erin Tanner had a 55 and Caitlyn Brooks had a 58 for Burbank.
