Leftist leader Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador turned 65 on Tuesday, just a few weeks before fulfilling his longstanding dream of becoming Mexico’s next president.

Lopez Obrador celebrated his birthday without announcing any public activities for the day after making a working visit to southeastern Mexico on Monday.

Over the past few days, the president-elect and his family have been vacationing at a beach hotel in Campeche.

Nevertheless, dozens of followers of the leftist politician gathered in front of his office in Mexico City on Tuesday to bring him assorted presents.

A group of teachers brought him some regional sweets and a band of mariachis sang the traditional Mexican birthday song of “Las Mañanitas,” even though the soon-to-become president was not in the building.

#FelizcumpleañosAMLO (#happybirthdayAMLO) became one of the most-used hashtags on Twitter on Tuesday morning.

“Happy birthday, Lopez Obrador! What better gift for our President-Elect than the support and affection of an entire nation,” said Esteban Moctezuma, soon to be AMLO’s public education minister, on Twitter.

“Long live our president ... it’s been worth this long walk,” a woman named Lili Garcia tweeted.

After finally winning the presidency on his third try, Lopez Obrador will take office on December 1 for the 2018-2024 term.
