On the Town: St. Joseph’s celebrates the sweet life

Share

For 69 years, the Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center Guild has worked to sweeten the lives of those who are in need of medical care, and so it was fitting that its recent spring fashion show and luncheon fundraiser was presented under the theme, “La Dolce Vita.”

As members and supporters arrived for this year’s event, they were greeted and checked in by guild member Grace Mylroie Patz, who will be celebrating her 102nd birthday this year.

Known throughout the guild as “Amazing Grace,” Mylroie Patz has been a dynamic and instrumental part of the organization for many years and, when she is not participating in her regular yoga classes at the Joslyn Adult Center, she is a volunteer at the gift gallery located in the lobby of Providence Saint Joseph Medical Center.

Welcomed by the guild’s president, Ollie Vick, and the event’s co-chairs, Kathleen Marsden and Julie McArdle, more than 350 attendees packed the Sheraton Universal Hotel’s Grand Ballroom to enjoy the day that included boutique shopping, lunch and the main event: a Lucinda Miedema-produced fashion show that featured the medical center’s physicians, staff members and supporters and showcased the new spring lines of major designers including Lourdes Chavez Couture, Elisabeth Saba Custom Knits and Berek NY.

The event — presided over by ABC-7 weatherman Garth Kemp, who served as the affair’s emcee — is the guild’s highest profile annual fundraiser that over recent years has assisted its members in completing their pledge of $500,000 for the Cusumano Family Outpatient Center that treats a broad range of neurological conditions and complements the inpatient services provided by the Howard and Hycy Hill Neuroscience Institute that is also located at the medical center.

This annual springtime event represents a yearlong planning process that is made possible by the dedication of many individuals. Among those who made this year’s fundraiser a success were Donna Mahoney, who served as an adviser to the co-chairs, and members of the committee composed of Marian Enos, Linda Brundage, Patricia Cassidy, Flora Jacoby, Rhoberta Kerr, Audrey Yates, Karen Barragan, Patricia Scully, Jill Allen, Pamela Shriftman, Maria Balke, Lucy Brown, Terry Campbell, Maureen Walsh, Claire Loughlin, Tricia Cimo, Jerry Delauney, Patricia Heaton, Sharon Reid, Wanda Bistagne, Lori Riela and Dee Call.

Others whose participation and support made for a successful day included Taul Mena, Robert Feinfield, George Teitelbaum, George Orloff, Stephan and Shahan Yacoubian, David Sato, Jeoug Lee, Soo Lee, Mark Mikhael, Justin Cahn, Nick Testa, Boyd Flindrers, Thomas David Zaun, Jim Mylroie, Laurel Anderson, Margaret Simms, Diane Robertson, Jack King, Marilyn Butler, Claire Loughlin, Jo Massimini, Roland and Alma Sarlot as well as Chuck, Roger and Justin Cusumano.
