Art show dedicated to Lueke
Artist Claude Hulce, who co-founded the Creative Arts Center in 1972, is having a retrospective show featuring his paintings and clay works made between the center’s opening and now.
He is dedicating the exhibit to the late Betsy Lueke, who with him co-founded the center.
Lueke worked with the city’s park and recreation department for 37 years and held the title of Recreation Supervisor when she retired, her daughter, Linda Oseransky, said. Lueke was an advocate of the Arts in Public Places ordinance, and established the Fine Arts Federation that supports the Creative Arts Center and the Performing Arts Federation that brought under one umbrella organization the Burbank Symphony, Choral Club, Police/Youth Band, Civic Light Opera and Little Theatre.
“She was a strong advocate of the arts in the community and a great supporter and admirer of Claude and his work, so I know she would be very pleased with the recognition from him,” Oseransky said.
Hulce taught art for almost 30 years as senior specialty activity leader with the park and recreation department, and was gallery director. He retired in 2001, but continues to teach pottery at the center, he said.
In the early 1970s, Lueke was teaching crafts classes and Hulce, just graduated with an art degree, was working in the city’s supplies warehouse. She would come to pick up supplies and he would ask her if she could get the city to hire him as an art teacher. And she did. The two worked at the Auld Lang Syne bungalow in Izay Park before the city built the new gallery and pottery studio in 1989 at the same location.
Hulce is showing more than 100 pottery pieces in the show, including several dragons, his signature (he is known as the Dragon Master, he says), jack-in-the-boxes and knights, and functional pieces like vases and bowls plus more than 35 abstract paintings.
The show opens with a reception from 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the center, 1100 W. Clark Ave. The exhibit will remain open through Sept. 27.
Emblem Club honors state officers
Burbank Emblem Club honored California State Association President Yvonne Fiori, State Marshal Leah Shiers, Emblem Club President Elaine Paonessa and 11 other state officers on “Aloha Hawaii” night at the Burbank Elks Lodge in July.
More than 50 members and guests from 13 other Southern California clubs had a Hawaiian buffet supper.
The event co-chairwomen were Barbara Maslyk and Linda Bailey, assisted by Bobbie Palmatary, Mary Hoffman, Lee Addessi, Cookie Bentavegna, Joanne Vallone and other club members.
Cabrini Guild has Membership Tea
Cabrini Literary Guild members and guests will kick off the year of activities with the annual Membership Tea from 2 to 4 p.m. Sept. 13 at the La Cañada Flintridge home of member Patty Szot.
Chairwoman is Joan Sandon, assisted by the Mannequin Department. Mary Andrade, president, and board members will greet the members and guests and be available to answer any questions regarding membership in the guild.

The guild is a philanthropic organization made up of about 105 members helping to support local charities through a fundraiser every March. The guild also oversees a writing contest every April that is open to all Catholic high school students in the Los Angeles Archdiocese.
10 named to hall of hame
Michael Matsuda, founder of the Martial Arts History Museum, announced that 10 of the world’s top martial arts figures were recently inducted during the museum’s eighth annual Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
Those recognized for their historical contributions were Benny Urquidez, Art Camacho, Joo Bang Lee, Carl Totton, Andrew Freund, Ed Parker Jr., Taejoon Lee, Karen Matsuda, Rafael Kosche and Olympic gold medalist Dana Hee.
The festivities during the induction dinner event included cultural Japanese dancing performed by the Fujima Kansuma dance school, taiko drumming from the Taiko Center of Los Angeles, and bits of comedy spread throughout the evening
