Animal lovers have a good laugh

“As an advocate of homeless animals, it is great for all of us with the Volunteers of the Burbank Animal Shelter (VBAS) to see so many people be extremely generous and willing to help us do what we do,” said Alexis Cole who serves as the organization’s director of development.

Along with being generous and willing to help the VBAS achieve their goals — to provide medical, social, behavioral and financial care for animals at risk and to eliminate animal homelessness in Burbank — the people referred to by Cole were also interested in enjoying an evening of comedy, cocktails and culinary delights as the VBAS staged their “Third Annual Laugh Your Tail Off” fundraiser at Flapper’s Comedy Club last Thursday.

Joining VBAS Operations Director Sally Chasman and Flapper’s owner Barbara Holiday, event volunteers Jon Kovel, Lorri Roberts, Monique Martin-Heath, Socorro Oseguera, Vicky Reagan and Eleanor O’Brien welcomed supporters to the evening that included the comedic stylings of NBC-4 weatherman Fritz Coleman, former “Tonight Show” writer Jimmy Brogan, and the 2003 winner of NBC’s “Last Comic Standing,” Dat Phan.

Among those who enjoyed the laugh fest, which saw the organization raise close to $7,500, were former Burbank Police Captain Janis Lowers who hosts the Burbank Channel 6 “Adopt-A-Pet” program, Dr. Martin Small who has donated untold hours of veterinarian services to the shelter over the years, and Shelly Rizzotti who championed the recently passed ordinance that bans the sale of puppies and kittens in Burbank pet shops. Others who enjoyed the evening included Linda Barnes, Jan Ramsey, Christopher Rizzotti, Kelli Lowers, Robin Dorn, Fabiana Rodriguez, Debbie Peterson and Casandra Armour.
