On the Town: Gathering for bookish conversation

In a gadgeted world in which folks garner the majority of their information and entertainment digitally, Liz Donatelli prefers to spend her time of learning and leisure cradling printed and bound paper.

“I’m a book-lover,” says Donatelli, the founder and host of Book’d in Burbank, a bookish social gathering that treats lovers of books to evenings of author readings and literary-themed entertainment. “This is a real passion for me. I’ve hosted a book club for the past three years, I love authors, and I’ve always wanted to do something like this for the literary community in Burbank and the valley.”

Having enjoyed a successful premiere this past January, local bibliophiles once again gathered at Theatre Banshee on Magnolia Boulevard for Book’d in Burbank, an evening that also included a dessert reception and the opportunity to mingle with the event’s showcased authors this past week.

Asked to bring used books for Operation Paperback, a book drive to benefit U.S. troops, attendees were treated to the comedic stylings of Jordan Likover and presentations by six women novelists: Michelle Gagnon, who writes young adult technothrillers; Robin Benway, who specializes in young-adult mysteries; Anne Kemp, who pens contemporary romance; Felice Fox, who authors erotic contemporary romance; Ann Royal Nicholas, whose genre is erotic mysteries; and mystery writer Tammy Kaehler.
