On the Town: Fashion fundraiser benefits Children’s Hospital

There are few things that can so sweetly fill the soul with joy like giving of ourselves for someone who is in need.

That message came through sweet and strong as the officers and members of the La Providencia Guild of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles presented their 66th annual fall fashion show fundraiser at the Sheraton Universal Hotel this past Saturday.

Staged under the theme, “Sweet Charity,” guild members and guests were welcomed to the Sheraton’s Grand Ballroom that had been candy-coated in a confection motif by the event’s chairwoman Glenda Jones, and the guild’s presiding officers, President Rosemarie Witten, Vice Presidents Tish Hawkins Sellers and Deborah Spang, Secretary Lynn White-Shelby, Treasurer Dorothy Austin and Public Relations Officer Lorelei Kelley.

Since its establishment in 1947, the La Providencia Guild has supported Children’s Hospital Los Angeles that, today, provides multidisciplinary care to more than 93,000 children annually with physician expertise in over 100 pediatric specialties and subspecialties.

Currently the fifth-ranked children’s hospital in the nation and the top-ranked facility of its kind in the western United States, the hospital is able to advance its developmental neuroscience program with funds raised by the numerous events the guild stages each year and through the proceeds of items sold at their Burbank Boulevard thrift store.

Among the special guests in attendance at Saturday’s fundraiser were Bonnie McClure and Suzanne Lapis, who serve as the chairman and director, respectively, of Children’s Hospital’s Office of Associates and Affiliates, Craig and Lisa Murray, who made a significant donation to fund the event, and Tina Kalayjian of Children’s Hospital’s cardiothoracic surgery program.

There was also a boutique and fashion show produced by Carin Holmenas, which showcased fashions provided by Lourdes Chavez.

As Saturday’s festivities came to a close, Chairwoman Jones lauded the work and dedication her committee, which included Sharon Terranova, Nancy Johnson, Sharon Ranshaw, Veronica Chavoor, Judy Pierce, Malena Tappan, Sandi Tomer, Leslie Lilly, Joan Chandler, Lurdes Munoz, Pat Maskell, Dorothy Austin, Judy Gragg, Katherine Richards, Alicia Katz, Ann Schwab, Sue Ann Gordon, Joni Herron, Tanya Karn, Janel Clausen and Carin Holmenas.
