Burbank Leader

The Foothill Civitan Club of Burbank’s Philanthropy Fundraising Event on May 8 at the Castaway Restaurant was a great success.

The fashion show, “Pretty as a Picture,” with members of the club and families as the models was very well done and the clothes were marvelous.

The Foothill Civitan Club is extremely proud to have previously underwritten the cost of three Canine Companions for Independence (CCI), assistance dogs, at a cost of $10,000 per dog.

Proceeds from this year’s event will enable them to continue to support projects like this, along with their other philanthropy projects including: scholarships at local high schools, continued support of Families of Spinal Muscular Atrophy, contributions to the Salvation Army’s various programs, sponsoring three families in the Burbank Coordinating Council’s Holiday Basket, sponsorship of the Annual Girls Ponytail Jamboree, which includes a parade, hot dog lunch and trophies and continued support of the BCR “a place to grow” and Tierra Del Sol, as well as many other charities.

Continued support of their many projects is solely dependent on the success of their fundraising events.

The club will be hosting the Ponytail League Ball Players on June 26.

The Foothill Civitan Club meets at 7 p.m. the second and fourth Tuesday of each month at the Don Tuttle Center. For more information, contact Karen Hubbard at (818) 842-4370 or at kikibethhubz@ sbcglobal.net.

Kiwanis hold scholarship day

The Kiwanis Club of Burbank on May 12 rewarded middle school students who exemplify outstanding citizenship through their honesty, dedication and concern for others.

The schools’ administration selects one student from each grade level for this award based on the following: Maintaining good attendance and academic performance; being committed to improving the school’s spirit by demonstrating positive leadership by example; students who demonstrate respect, honesty, integrity and concern for school staff and fellow students; those who participate in extracurricular activities within or outside the school.

This year’s winners, who were presented scholarship awards, were: Adam Downie from John Burroughs; Brett Thomas from Monterey High School; Laura James and Jordan Steele from Burbank Adult School; and Christine Yang from Burbank High School.

Receiving Kiwanis Citizenship Awards were: Nina Cavalheiro, Caroline Ghanberry and Sam McKinnon from John Muir Middle School; Jake Zedlar, Molly Buffington and Tiffany Mirabal from Jordan Middle School; Jessica Padungyothee, Manny Ilasco and Jessy James Taylor from Luther Burbank Middle School. These are sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. Kiwanians David Harris, Loren Jonkey and BruceLilly presented the program.

The Kiwanis Club of Burbank meets at noon every Wednesday at the YMCA, 321 W. Magnolia Blvd., Burbank. For more information, contact Harvey Branman at (818) 954-9294 or at hbranman@ pacbell.net.

Aktion Club goes to Disneyland

The Burbank Kiwanis Aktion Club qualified through the Disney “Give a Day, Get a Day” program for free passes to Disneyland and took advantage of it on May 7. It was truly a “magical day” for them. Amazing as it may seem to most of us who live in Southern California, some of the members had never been to the Magic Kingdom, so it was all the more exciting to them.

The club earned the passes by working at Ronald McDonald House in Los Angeles earlier this year.

They served the residents dinner, cleaned and sterilized appliances, furniture, door knobs and helped the residents and their families to make greeting cards for the ones that were ill.

The Aktion Club and their advisors from Burbank Kiwanis For Fun and BCR, also enjoyed the Disneyland Parade and they danced salsa with the Disney entertainers.

They loved the Safari Adventure, It’s a Small World and Pirates of the Caribbean. They were sorry that Thunder Mountain was closed, but it did not stop them from having a great time.
